초록
This paper is primarily concerned with English word order, particularly Old English word order in the framework of the minimalist architecture. It has been well known that the Old English word order has long resisted any principled generative and minimalist account. In the generative framework, word order variation is accounted for by phrase structure grammar implemented by the superficial surface order among subject, verb and object. Meanwhile in the minimalist framework word order has been explained by head parameter, linear correspondence axiom, feature checking and labeling. In this article after arguing how the Old English word order can be treated in the generative and minimalist approaches, it is concluded that the labelling approach permits a more natural and revealing account of the Old English word order among various approaches put forward by generative grammar and minimalism.
