초록
The essay discusses the ways in which Theresa Hak Kyung Cha re-members the contained and dismembered female bodies in Dictee, reading it as an unconventional autobiographical text. Words in Dictee are very much corporeal, embodying the flesh’s dual meaning—incarnate and incarnadine. Cha’s project in Dictee is to create a more body-like text than a real body and to thwart any normalizing attempt to contain her body/text, producing unpredictable and uncontrollable ‘accidents’ that expose the failure of containment. The essay demonstrates that a crucial function of Cha’s corporeal language is re-membering: re-membering of mothers’ stories, re-membering of daughters’ dismembered bodies, and re-membering of family members together.
