초록

This paper examines George Bernard Shaw’s Pygmalion and Willy Russell’s Educating Rita in the context of feminism in British society in the early and late twentieth-century, focusing on how both playwrights revise the Pygmalion myth and reinterpret the Greek creation narrative. Shaw and Russell reflect the social and political changes in women’s status and empowerment in twentieth-century Britain. They break the silence of Galatea and give convincing voices to Eliza and Rita, the Galatea figures. While the improvement of women’s status and the subversion of the creator’s power are addressed in both adaptations, these rewritings also confirm the existence of a patriarchal society that continues to restrain the rights of women. In conclusion, the dramatic adaptations of the Pygmalion myth by Shaw and Russell are significant in that they reflect and represent changes in gender equality while indicating pre-existing suppression of women in British society.
