Abstract

Inversion Constructions in English and EPPLee, Eunjung and An, Dong-hwanThe purpose of this study is to analyze the movements of inversion constructions in English within the framework of the Minimalist Program. According to Chomsky(2000, 2001), Move is a composite operation of Agree, pied-piping and Merge. However, in some inversion constructions, Move can be operated separately from Agree to satisfy EPP. Therefore this study proposes the "Separate EPP" hypothesis that only Move is operated to satisfy the EPP of T. This study shows that this proposal is motivated in there-constructions, locative inversions, quotative inversions, and adjective inversions in English. It also shows that an expletive there merges in the Spec of an weak phase vP if it is a non-theta position. There can move to the Spec of T to satisfy EPP. In all the above inversion constructions Move can commonly be operated to satisfy the EPP of the functional head T.
