A Syntactic Analysis of Th/Ex-Constructions and Some Results

본 논문은 Chomsky(2001)의 Th/Ex규칙에 대한 설명적 타당성을 통사적인 분석을 통하여 이 규칙이 Chomsky(2001)가 제안한 음운규칙이 될 수 없다는 것을 제시한다. 먼저 존재적-there구문과 제시적-there구문 사이에 나타나는 통사적인 분포의 차이를 통해서 이 두 구문은 분리되어 다루어져야 한다는 것을 제시하고, Th/Ex규칙과 관련된 제시적-there구문의 분석에 연구의 초점을 맞출 것이다. 또 존재적-there구문에서의 허사 there와 관련어의 통사적 분포에서 관찰되는 현상과는 달리, 제시적 허사 there는 관련어 DP를 반드시 비대칭적으로 성분-통어해야 한다는 조건을 제시한다. 이 조건을 통하여, Chomsky(2001)가 음운부에서의 일종의 이동규칙으로 제시한 Th/Ex규칙과 관련된 구문들을 분석한다. 이 구문들에 나타난 현상들은 음운적 규칙인 Th/Ex의 적용에 의해서가 아니라, 정밀통사도출에서의 통사적 운용에 의해서도 그 수용가능성 여부를 기술하고 설명할 수 있다는 것을 확인한다. 따라서 Chomsky(2001)가 제시한 음운적 운용인 Th/Ex규칙은 잉여적이라는 결론을 도출한다.
