Abstract
A Study on Metaphor in Pepper’s ContextualismYoo, Byung-Hwa This paper introduces a synthetic paradigm of contextualism to examine theories of metaphor and suggest an alternative view related to the context of utterance or writing. Contextualism which takes an on-going ‘historical event’ as its episteme assumes that any event interacting with and within the context continuously changes its total meaning or characteristics in each moment. There is no event with fixed context-free meaning.Contextualism has implications for the theory of metaphor especially concerning cognitive content and status of metaphor. There is no fixed context-free metaphorical meaning unchangeable notwithstanding the context. If there is any metaphor treated as having its own fixed meaning without consideration of the context, let us name it a ‘conceptual metaphor.’ ‘Contextual metaphor,’ on the other hand, follows the assumptions of contextualism. The meaning of a metaphor is drawn out of a specific context in which it is situated. There the meaning of a metaphor is examined in terms of concepts in contextualism such as “fusion, spread, blocking, instrumental reference, emergent novelty, individual texture, qualitative confirmation,” etc.Theories of metaphor so far have had focus mainly on conceptual metaphors. This paper argues that contextual metaphor rather than conceptual or non-contextual metaphor brings us specific and individual context-sensitive meaning.
