Abstract

The aim of this paper is to investigate the relations of metaphor and analogy, focusing on psychological process of them. It is often accepted that metaphor is a cognitive process which understand one thing in terms of another thing. According to Lakoff & Johnson(1980), metaphor is a systematic mapping from source domains to target domains. If we accept Lakoff's theory of metaphor, metaphor uses many of the same mental processes as analogical thinking. The core process of analogy is the structural alignment between domains. It could be said metaphor and analogy are alike if metaphor is interpreted through cross-domain alignment. The novel metaphorical expressions coherent with conceptual metaphors are interpreted through structural alignment, the same mechanism used in analogy. The processes of metaphoric expressions which are unconnected conceptual metaphors are controversial. But we can find some tendencies that systematic correspondences between domains lead comparison. On the other hand when elements are connected in isolation, metaphorical expressions are interpreted by attributing salience properties of the Vehicle to the Topic, not by structural alignment. The interpretation of conceptual combination which is expressed with compound noun, is not based on analogy and cannot be explained by mechanism such as structural alignment.
