초록
Dionne Brand’s In Another Place, Not Here is a text preoccupied with movement, which is achieved via constant migration and act of walking. These movements emphasize the marginalized and precarious status of gendered and colored Caribbean female immigrants, which this paper focuses on. Thus, the aim for this paper is to analyze the protagonists’ struggles to inhabit the city by unbelonging; they transgress and transform space and its attached meanings through their act of walking in the city. Drawing on Michel de Certeau’s notion on tactics and enunciation in The Practice of Everyday Life, I argue that the novel presents how the act of walking goes beyond geographical significance and functions as the speech act. Through this practice, Verlia and Elizete’s unheard stories are retrieved in their trails which also become an apparatus in constructing physical contact with the cityspace.
