초록
The paper examines the resistance and agency of female characters in Shalimar the Clown who are trapped between neocolonialism and terrorism, both products of essentialist male hegemonic rule. Against the backdrop of India’s Partition and the Kashmir conflict, it explores how they are enabled to counter neocolonialism and terrorism through the acts of pregnancy, speaking back, and name-changing, among others. In an effort to expand the limits of Frederic Jameson’s national allegory in the context of Third World literature, the paper also focuses on the dynamics of not only global allegory but also vernacular one, thereby shedding light on the possibility of reading Rushdie’s novel from the perspective of postcolonial resistance and agency.
