초록

This study aims to examine the effects of gender and the level of proficiency on speech accommodation under L2 perception and production process for vowels (/i/, /u/, /æ/, /ɑ/). A perception test and an imitation production test were performed on 20 college students (Male 10, Female 10). The experimental data were extracted using the phonetic analysis of the Praat program and analyzed by statistical program (SPSS, R). As a result, in the perception test, there was a significant difference in the type of vowels (/æ/>/ɑ/>/i/=/u/), regardless of gender and the level of proficiency. In the imitation production test, gender had a lot of influence on speech accommodation whereas the level of proficiency was not statistically significant. The experimental participants tended to have greater speech accommodation when the gender of the English native speakers that they imitated was the same. This study suggests that speech accommodation could be approached not only from the existing phonological perspectives but also from the sociolinguistic perspectives.
