The purpose of this study is to classify and analyze the various playful characteristics found in the contemporary knit fashion design. The method of study is two-fold. One is a critical review of previous literature and the other is a qualitative analysis of collected data. The data covers works of Milan, Paris, London and New York collections from the periods of 2007 S/S to 2011 F/W. 359 pieces of works were collected from ‘Gap Press’fashion magazine and website, www. stylesight.com. The findings of this study were as follows. Firstly, the playful characteristics were classified into transformation, parody, inharmony, and a breach of wearing rules. Secondly, 'transformation' had a playful feature as the form of freely deviating from the silhouette of human body through the intentional exaggeration and reduction of dress patterns. Thirdly, 'inharmony’had a playful feature by unexpected use of the materials of disparate elements. Fourthly, 'parody' came from delightful use of colors, graffiti, and patterns. Lastly, 'the breach of wearing rules' had a playful feature by shocking escape from the existing wearing rules.
