Abstract
This thesis studies the process of the change of "the provisions on lay people" which are indicated in the local canon law of Korea. The Korean canon law has been developed as follows: "Directorium commune missionum coreae" (1931) which is the first guidebook of Korean Roman Catholic Church, had been prepared by the French missionaries and completed in 1931; the 100th anniversary of establishment of Chosun apostolic vicariatewas celebrated in this year. In this guidebook, the content on lay people is composed of three articles and seven clauses. The "Directorium commune missionum coreae" (1931) which is the first guidebook of Korean Catholic Church in Latin was promulgated while the theology on the laity had been lying idle in Korea. This guidebook emphasizes only the duties of lay people rather than their rights. That is to say, it stipulates for the laity to keep the time of obligation during Easter, the prohibition of cohabitation before the valid marriage, the protection of slaves, and the ladies’ modesty. At that time, as we see in this guidebook, the position and the role of lay people were very passive in the Korean Catholic Church. Namely, the understanding of Church’s authority was reserved only for the priests, so the mission of lay people had been seen very passively in the Church. Time went by, and the Korean Catholic Church published the new "Directorium commune missionum coreae" in 1958. Unfortunately, however, the content and the spirit of the "Directorium commune missionum" in 1931 did not change too much. After that time, the Korean national pastoral conference was held in 1984 in remembrance of the 200th anniversary of the foundation of Korean Catholic Church. One of the twelve themes here was about the laity. The conference understood the Korean Catholic Church precisely, and showed the future picture of the Korean Catholic Church; how it will be and what will be her tasks. The results of the Korean national pastoral conference have a great significance; there were not the mere theoretical suggestions because it had been studied through discussions, examinations on the basis of answering lay people about their concrete lives and faith. For the practice of the results, above all, it is required the paradigm shift of the priests, religious and the laity. For all the problems and suggestions which were given from the Korean national pastoral conference held in memory of the 200th anniversary of the foundation of the Korean Catholic Church, not only the laity, but also the priests and all religious have to be attentive to them, and to keep them as the concrete material of their examination and practice in daily lives. Even though time has already passed since then, it is necessary to take much more time in order to set up the authentic position and the apostolate of the laity in accordance with the results of the conference. The Korean Catholic Church will continue to be enlightened and remain vividly on the basis of the spiritof evangelization if only all the results of the conference would be well practiced in the Church. Lastly, "Directorium pastorale Coreae"published in 1995 is the first local canon law of Korea which is synthesized with the Code of Canon Law of 1983 and the results of the Korean national pastoral conference. The content about lay people of "Directorium pastorale Coreae" (1995) is composed of four articles and ten clauses. Those provisions on the laity are reexamined on the basis of the Code of Canon Law (1983) and the result of the Korean national pastoral conference. Besides, the differences between the Code of Canon Law and the results of the Korean national pastoral conference about the provisions on the laity were studied as well. It is greatly significant that the Korean Catholic Church held the Korean national pastoral conference to mark the 200thanniversary of the foundation of Korean Catholic Church, and she had the "Directorium pastorale Coreae" (1995) which is well fit for her for the first time in the history of Korean Catholic Church. It is more important for us to check how much it has been practiced in the Korean Catholic Church. Without thorough consideration and examination, the Church can not but come to a standstill.
