Abstract
The spiritual rights of the Christian faithful are grounded in the ontological grace received through baptism and develop into action-based rights exercised through catechesis, participation in the sacraments, and apostolic engagement. This study distinguishes between ius existentiale (rights of being) and ius exercitium (rights of action), with a particular focus on the latter. These rights are not confined to interior piety but are concretely realized through the faithful’s active participation in doctrinal formation, liturgical worship, evangelization, and the establishment of lay associations. Canon law provisions such as Canon 213 define these rights not as acts of pastoral benevolence, but as claimable rights that the faithful can exercise, thereby providing a juridical foundation for lay co-responsibility and the implementation of synodality within the Church. Moreover, these rights challenge the vertical structure centered on clergy and promote ecclesial renewal by recognizing the spiritual agency of the laity and the diversity of charisms. This paper organizes spiritual rights according to the structural flow of acquisition, strengthening, and practice—highlighting that these are not merely declarative rights, but responsible rights that the faithful are called to exercise and realize within the ecclesial community. It also reveals that the Church’s legislator intentionally incorporates this orientation into canonical norms. In conclusion, the study confirms that action-based spiritual rights function not only as means of personal sanctification, but also as essential elements for the realization of the Church’s common good and missionary vocation.
