알레싼드로 발리냐노(Alessandro Valignano)의 「그리스도교 신앙 교리서」(Catechismus Christianae Fidei)에서 나타나는 적응주의적 입장

초록

중국에서 이루어진 예수회 선교사들의 학문적 업적은 마테오 리치(Matteo Ricci, 1552-1610 )의 천주실의에서 그 정점을 이룬다고 해도 과언이 아닐 것이다. 그러나 마테오 리치의 이러한 학문적인 업적은 그의 선임자이자 현지 장상이었던 알레싼드로 발리냐노(Alessandro Valignano, 1539- 1606)가 없었다면 불가능하였을 것이다. 발리냐노는 동양선교에 있어서 처음으로 적응주의적 입장을 선교정책으로 결정하였을 뿐만이 아니라 교리서로 편찬하였고 나아가서 그대로 실천을 한 인물이었다. 또한 발리냐노는 마테오 리치가 적응주의적 선교신학을 완성하는 데에 있어서, 그리고 중국에서 예수회 선교사들이 소위 서학(西學)이라는 학문의 꽃을 피우도록 씨앗의 역할을 한 인물이었다. 본 논문은 알레싼드로 발리냐노의 교리서인 『Catechismus Christianae Fidei』에 대한 기초적 연구이다. 따라서 『Catechismus Christianae Fidei』가 어떠한 배경을 통해서 탄생하였으며 무엇을 목적으로 하는지를 고찰하고자 한다. 나아가서 이 교리서가 발리냐노 시대 전후에 발간된 다양한 교리서와는 어떠한 차별성을 지니는지를 살피고자 한다. 또한 그가 선교를 수행하려던 일본에서 그의 입장은 어떠하였는지 그리고 그에 대한 이론적 배경은 무엇이었는지를 보고자 한다. 발리냐노의 교리서는 적응주의적 입장을 나타내는 선구자적인 교리서로 인정받아야 할 것이다. 그는 여타의 교리서와는 달리 교리서에 대한 구성을 새롭게 하였다. 그는 이를 통해서 교리서 서두에 이성에 대하여 강조하였으며 일본 전통 종교의 가르침에 대해서 서술하고 있다. 그의 이러한 시도는 그리스도교의 가르침을 일본의 구체적인 선교 상황에 전파해야 함을 목적으로 하고 있다고 말할 수 있다. 그는 선교지의 전통 종교에 대하여 가능한 객관적 입장을 취하고 있다. 이성적인 고찰을 통해서 그 가르침들에 오류가 있다고 판단되면 발리냐노는 이에 대한 비판적 자세를 아끼지 않는다. 발리냐노의 교리서는 선교지의 종교와 문화에 많은 영향을 끼친 것으로 사료된다. 그리고 그의 입장을 따라서 미켈레 루제리(Michele Ruggieri, 1543-1607)와 마테오 리치는 중국 선교에 있어서 적응주의적 입장을 취한다.

Abstract

T´ien-chu Shih-i(天主實義) written by Matteo Ricci(1552-1610) was the culmination of academic achievements of the Jesuits Missionary in China. But without his predecessor and the local superior at his time, Alessandro Valignano(1539-1606) it would be unimaginable to have such a success. Valignano was the first person amongst the missionary in Asia, who decided not only the accomodation attitude as a mission policy, but also wrote a catechism that appears to have the accomodation attitude and brought this attitude into practice. Valignano was the person who played as a seed in order that Matteo Ricci and the other Jesuits missionary consummated his missions theology and carried out Western Learning. Therefore, we can say that the of Alessandro Valignano will offer an important glimpse about Western Learning. This paper is a fundamental study about his work 『Catechismus Christianae Fidei』. Therefore it will be discussed with its background 『Catechismus Christianae Fidei』 was born and aimed for the catechism he had. Furthermore it will observe differences this catechism has from the other catechisms. Also it will be discussed in which position Valignano had and what the theoretical base was for it. Catechism of Valignano should be accepted as the precursor for the accomodation theory in the mission in Asia. The construction of his catechism is very new and different from other books in this area which were published at the same century. Valignano emphasized the role of human reason in the introduction and explained the teachings of japanese traditional religions. His attempt aimed to proclaim the teachings of the Church in the concrete situation of Japan as mission area. He took objective perspective to the traditional religions of Japan. But if he judged through reasoning that there are some erroneous teaching, he didn’t hesitate to criticize it. His work infected a lot not only in japanese religion and cultures, but also in chinese through Michele Ruggieri(1543-1607) and Matteo Ricci, who took accomodations attitude in China Mission.
