Abstract

This paper investigates the possibility of the cognitive linguistical study on religious texts like biblical texts. As the first step for this, it searches for specific primary metaphors and compound metaphors of religious languages as well as the relationship between the compound metaphors and the culture, based on the conceptual metaphor theory of Lakoff/Johnson and on the primary and compound metaphors theory of Grady. Religious languages conceptualize a supernatural being as an entity. This is called THE SUPERNATURAL BEING IS AN ENTITY. From the babyhood, all human beings experience that a supernatural being, which C. Jung calls Numinosum, exists. They conceptualize that there is an supernatural entity out of himself, based on their own supernatural and abstract experience. THE SUPERNATURAL BEING IS AN ENTITY conceptualizes metaphorically this primitive human religious experience, which everyone who has a human body experiences. This primary metaphor is found commonly in all religious languages of all religions. In addition, there are various compound metaphors to conceptualize metaphorically the human religious experience of supernatural beings. For example, GOD IS A FATHER, GOD IS A SUN, GOD IS A SENDER, GOD IS A KING, etc. Differently from the primary metaphor, most of compound metaphors are found variously according to their cultures. This paper discusses about the university and variation of compound metaphors of religious languages, based on Kövecses’s theory. Especially, this paper shows that the diversity of the same metaphor is found between Matthew and John, who belong to the same judeo-christian culture. The reason is that the variation of compound metaphors is not caused just by the diversity of subcultures, but also by the differential experience and differential cognitive preferences. Finally, this paper discusses that all compound metaphors are influenced by their cultures, but the religious metaphors influence their cultures as well, because religious languages make people realize their belief, which is embedded in their metaphors, in their concrete life and culture.
