Abstract

According to cognitive linguistics, a metaphor is understood to be a systematic structualization of an abstract concept, based on the basic logic of a concrete concept. Lakoff and Johnson say that all everyday languages are basically metaphorical because the conceptual system that we use in thinking and acting is metaphorical. Our everyday metaphorical language is called "linguistic metaphor" while a "conceptual metaphor" is reflected in our everyday language by a wide variety of linguistic metaphors. This paper analyzes metaphors in Psalm XXIII, based on the Conceptual metaphor theory of Lakoff and Johnson and shows that there are various metaphors used in the Hebrew text of Psalm XXIII such as ontological metaphors, orientational metaphors and structural metaphors. These conceptual metaphors were not those invented by the psalmist himself, but were already known because they were in common usage, based on the national common experience of the Exodus and the Wilderness and, thereafter, fixed in everyday language. In Psalm XXIII, the psalmist expresses his proper religious experience through these common conceptual metaphors. In addition, this paper shows that two structural metaphors, namely, GOD IS A SHEPHERD and GOD IS A LORD, found in Psalm XXIII, are not unconnected metaphors seperately inserted in the psalm. They are coherently connected, based on the common experience of the Exodus and the Wilderness. The former metaphor emphasizes JOURNEY while the latter emphasizes JOYFUL BANQUET. Therefore, it is a mistake to think that the two images of Psalm XXIII are not connected to each other and to modify the text in order to give consistency to Psalm XXIII. This research shows that the conceptual metaphor theory is a very useful method to study biblical texts, especially poetic texts.
