Abstract

This study offers a theological reflection on the necessity of infused contemplation in the journey toward Christian perfection, focusing on Réginald Garrigou-Lagrange’s Perfection chrétienne et contemplation. By examining the relationship between asceticism and mysticism, the nature of infused contemplation, and the essence of perfection, this research seeks to clarify the intrinsic significance of infused contemplation in the path toward perfection and to reassess its proper place within the life of Christian spirituality. Since the seventeenth century, there has been a tendency to separate asceticism and mysticism, but Garrigou-Lagrange understands them not as two disconnected paths but as a single continuous journey. Infused contemplation is both ordinary and necessary for attaining perfection, for several reasons. First, perfection is situated within the mystical realm, and anyone who enters this realm necessarily experiences infused contemplation. Second, perfection and infused contemplation share a common source in the gifts of the Holy Spirit; because they proceed from the same principle, they are inseparably linked. Third, the passive purifications of the senses and of the spirit constitute essential aspects of infused contemplation. Since these purifications are indispensable for reaching perfection, infused contemplation must necessarily be present within the journey toward it. Garrigou-Lagrange thus demonstrates that infused contemplation, often regarded as extraordinary, secondary, or even potentially dangerous within the spiritual life, is in fact an ordinary and universal path that all Christians are called to follow.
