Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine the differences in children's racial awareness, preferences, knowledge, experiences and criteria according to age. This study targeted 167 4-, 5-, and 6 year-old children from one kindergarten and one elementary school located in Kyong Gi Do. A questionnaire survey was carried out uaing a tool that the author of this paper reproduced, based on the studies of Levyies of and Quintanaies 8). The collected data were statistically processed uaing frequencta percentiles and a χ2 test of the SPSS 12.0 program. The results of this study can be summarized as follow: First, 4-year-old children could not recognize race, but 6-year-old children were usually aware of racial differences Second, 4-year-old children preferred Caucasians whereas 5-, and 6-year-old children tended to appreciate Asians. Third, most 6-year-old children learn about race in the context of everyday life and passed the different racial person. Also 4-year-old children had developed an egocentric criterion regarding race, but 6-year-old children had an over generation.
