Abstract
This study's objective is to understand the meaning of humor by examining children's humor characteristics and the contextual elements of humor in peer relationship, the important social context of children. To that end, the study used an ethnographic inquiry to understand the meaning of humor through natural actual case of children. As a result, the humor characteristics of children are classified into distortion, exaggeration, linguistic diversion, conversion and unexpectedness, and appear in a set combined by more than one elements in humor. In addition, the contextual elements associated with humor of children in peer relationship can be classified into recognitive similarity versus difference among peers, coincidence vs discrepancy of personal permission range of community rule observance, familiarity vs repulsion among actor and respondent, and social recognitive dilemma on humor. Such contextual elements surrounding humor strengthen or weaken peer relationship by allowing experiences that are repeated in peer relationship, and are further involved in the socialization of individuals.
