Abstract

This thesis is focusing on 1950's gender roles that victimize both Martha and George. Portraying 1950's sex stereotypes, Albee saw his Martha, one of the characters in his play, Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? not as a monster, but as a sympathetic character almost destroyed by the limited options open to women in her time. Albee seems to wonder what Martha might have been like if she had seen herself as the main character in her own life. So, Albee reveals his interest in contemporary women's roles by his title’s reference to the writer Virginia Woolf. Albee sees the significance of the author, Virginia Woolf, having no children, paralleling Martha's position in the play. However, the parallel ends there, since Virginia Woolf, although biologically not a parent, was the creator of dozens of memorable characters, among them Mrs. Ramsay of To the lighthouse. Clearly, then, biological lack of fertility does not need to relegate one to inevitable failure and non-productivity, as it does Martha. So Albee seems to insist that if Martha could be the main character in her own life as Virginia Woolf did, she would find nothing more to fear from Virginia Woolf, and we would find nothing more to fear from her.
