Abstract

This study purposes to analyze the process how the idea of metatheatricality embodied in Shakespeare's The Tempest contributes to create Peter Greenaway's Prospero's Books, an adaptation of The Tempest, using digital technologies. Metatheatre challenges the notion of realistic representation of the world and theatrical illusionism; on the contrary, it draws our attentions to the strangeness and artificiality of life we live. Self-reflexive reference to the theatrical medium and the attitude to view oneself as an artist as well as an artifice are specific characteristics of metatheatre. Ultimately, this kind of attitude leads to the world view of Theatrum Mundi, that means this world is a stage and on which we are players for some predestined time. This kind of metatheatrical retrospection helps us to widen our perspective for our condition of existence and one's own self. Greenaway pursues to realize this sort of self-reflexivity inherent in metatheatre in his experiments with the film. Greenaway criticizes that although the cinema is the most advanced artistic genre in terms of technology, it's the most conservative art form in that it makes the audience passive consumers of the movie. He seeks the possibility of achieving new paradigm for the film in digital technology, such as the graphic paintbox, multiple framing, and superimposition of images. In this study, I tried to explain how Prospero in the film creates it's own artistic work in two dimensions. First, by analyzing Prospero's books, I tried to show the various levels of realities as well as fantasies represented on screen are the results of his knowledge, metaphorically a compilation of all of the historical and cultural accumulation of human experiences. Secondly, I tried to show the process how his potential reality, that is, his unconsciousness and fantasies are revealed by images reflected in the various forms of mirrors in the film. Greenaway points out the digital technology with which we now live gave us Prospero's magical power in our hand and each of us can create one's own digital island using that power. His message from artistic experiments makes us to reflect upon the role of art and technology in digital environment.
