본고는 일상의 평범한 사람들이 무대에 등장해 관객들에게 그들의 삶을 전달하는 연극들에 초점을 맞춘다. 이러한 작업들은 실제 사람들과 그들의 경험, 그리고 그들이 일상에서 사용하는 물건들을 통해 극장 밖 현실을 드러낸다. 이 논문에서는 이와 같은 연극적 실천의 의미를 살펴보기 위해 다큐멘터리 연극이라는 문제틀을 넘어 ‘실재의 연극’ 개념을 제안한다. 이러한 양식의 연극들은 실재와 허구의 경계가 희미해지고, 다양한 기술에 힘입어 개인의 서사가 널리 유포되거나 소비되는 동시대 매체 환경을 전제로 해석될 수 있다. 이에 네지 피진의 <모티베이션 대행>(2012)과 크리에이티브 바키의 <몇 가지 방식의 대화들>(2014) 두 가지 사례를 통해 연극이 실재를 무대화하는 전략을 분석한다. 이 연극들은 이야기 당사자들의 상호작용을 통해 드라마투르기를 결정하고, 다양한 물건들을 활용해 그들이 살면서 몸에 익혀온 습관적 행위를 반복하게 함으로써 무대의 시노그라피를 구축한다. 이때 퍼포머들이 수행하는 것은 전통적이고 관습적인 맥락의 연기로 해석될 수 없다는 점에서, 이들이 자기 자신을 드러내는 방식에 대한 새로운 연구 과제가 제기된다. 실재의 연극은 살아있는 경험을 통해 일상과 사회를 매개하고, 이로써 단순한 미학적 이론이 아닌 수행적 실천으로 거듭난다.
Abstract
This thesis focuses on the theatres in which ordinary people appear on stage and speak to spectators about their own life stories. These productions reveal the reality outside theatre by relying on real people, their experiences, and the objects they use in everyday life. Going beyond the frame of documentary theatre, this thesis attempts to investigate the significance of this practice in contemporary theatre by adopting the “Theatre of the Real” concept. I argue that this style of theatre should be interpreted in the context of contemporary culture’s new media environment; the boundary between reality and fiction is blurred with the rise of various interactive and mobile technologies, personal narratives, more than ever, are broadcasted, curated, and consumed. I present two case studies and an analysis of staging strategies that are intrinsic to theatre to demonstrate how a theatre of the real can transform the perception of the real: Pijin Neji’s The Acting Motivation(2012) and Creative VaQi’s The Conversations(2014). In these two productions, the dramaturgical strategy is determined by the interaction between participants and the scenography is constructed by performing their daily practices with a wide range of object. In a theatre of the real, the performativity of the real people who convey their own experience onstage has transcended the conventional frames of acting. Therefore it is requested to investigate various contemporary theatre productions to examine how the performers identify themselves in their own way. I believe theatre of the real is not only an aesthetic theory but also a performative practice as it embodies the ways in which theatre mediates the everyday life and the society through the lived experience of participants.
