Abstract

This paper aims to study how The Talchum mitigates performer´s mental, emotional, and psychological pain, taking the focusing therapy than cure. If cure simply means removing the biological illness in medical terms, therapy means the various experience of treating physical, mental, social sickness. In other words, therapy implies concern, affection and care in humanities terms. Therefore, this article will consider the diverse dynamic transformative process how The Talchum's performance participants experience from physically, mentally, socially abnormal disease to stable condition, i.e. healthy states that generates the qualitative change of life. By staging The Talchum, performance participants experience identity transformation that they reflects themselves, simultaneously representing themselves. This process urges performance participants to come into a new and more meaningful relationship with existing life. So the following will say this process is the key point of the therapeutic functions that The Talchum works. In the therapeutic functional terms, this paper's premises are as follows. In the first, taking part in The Talchum performance itself is therapeutic process because The Talchum performance is the staging of repressed unconsciousness. Second, performer is therapist for village people that play audience roles, but, at the same time, performer is too village member, so performers are therapists and patients in one in order to reflect and transform village member's life experience. Third, the transformative process of selves and communities that is achieved by The Talchum performance is regarded as therapeutic process that overcomes the disease and recovers the healthy states of inner growth. Thus, part one will examine the trace of theater therapy in The Talchum's macroscopic performative structure, so-called made up of several ritual of The ChungSin, The OhSin, The SongSin. And part two will investigate the sprouts of theater therapeutic technique in The Talchum's performative scenes, such as embodiment, projection, play and ritual, symbol and metaphor, roleplaying.
