Abstract

Bong Joon-ho's Parasite (2019) made history as the first Korean film to win the Palme d'Or at the 72nd Cannes Film Festival-one of the world's three most prestigious film festivals-and subsequently the Academy Award for Best Picture, establishing a new milestone not only in Korean cinema but also in world film history. Transcending the genres of a mere thriller or black comedy, the film serves as a sociological text that metaphorically reveals the structural inequalities and class disparities inherent in capitalist society. Its narrative reflects the specific realities of Korea while simultaneously exposing universal issues of inequality that resonate with global audiences, thereby generating international discourse. Despite its rapid economic growth, Korean society suffers from deepening polarization between social strata, where the wealth gap and inequality of opportunity are entrenched as structural problems that cannot be overcome by individual effort alone. Parasite juxtaposes the impoverished Kim family, living in a semi-basement , with the affluent Park family residing in an architecturally distinct luxury home. Through the symbolism of these dwelling spaces and the lives of their inhabitants, the film starkly illuminates the disconnection and inequality between social classes. This paper employs the framework of the modern German philosopher G. W. F. Hegel to conduct a dialectical analysis of the socio-physical spaces within Parasite and the class struggle they engender, seeking to elucidate the inherent fluidity within the system of human desire, labor, and satisfaction. The film can be illuminated through Hegel's exploration of the universal human condition, particularly his discussion of the "master-slave dialectic." However, this study focuses on the point where the class conflict fails to reach a developmental Synthesis(Aufhebung); instead of being resolved, it is frustrated and trapped in a vicious cycle, precipitated by the variable of a violent event. The film concludes without the contradictions of class conflict and binary opposition being understood or resolved for any of the families involved. As Hegel suggested, reflection(Reflexion) fails to act as a mediating moment. The internal unity towards a Synthesis in the realm of spirit is not achieved. Violence proves incapable of resolving real-world class conflict, ultimately leading only to catastrophe or the repetition of violence. This is intimately connected to the inherent, extrinsic contradictions of capitalism. The narrative of Parasite is a significant exemplar that effectively reveals the "dialectical configuration of contradiction" produced by Korean capitalism. Of course, alternatives or solutions are not provided instantaneously; they can only emerge through social awareness, consciousness, and sustained efforts toward reform and transformation. This paper examines the meanings revealed through the dialectical logic and the intended "unfinished configuration" presented in Parasite.
