초록

This study aims to examine the effects of arts experience in terms of the development of human mind by analyzing Pina Bausch’s arts from the view of Rousseau’s philosophy. Rousseau, an Enlightenment philosopher, was very interested in the evolution of human mind. He advocated the theory of “natural man” whose mind is fully developed as a human being, suggesting freedom as the essence of “natural man” His colleagues had distorted Rousseau’s idea of freedom. The conflict between them occurred by an academic paper with which Rousseau won the prize contests by Dijon Academy in 1749. Rousseau insisted that civil men in 18th century were rather corrupted by the advanced exercise of humanities and arts. Such an assertion was based on Rousseau’s developmental theory of human mind. This study appreciates Pina Bausch as an example of artist embodying Rousseau’s philosophy of “natural man”. Pina Bausch represents not only an existential being herself but also an existential teacher who invokes autonomy in the depth of human mind.
