칸트에 의해 ‘공간’과 더불어 인식형식으로 규정된 ‘시간’은 관념적이고 추상적인 성격 때문에 역사학이 아니라 주로 철학에서 연구되어왔다. 역사학에서 일부 취급되어왔다 하더라도 그 탐구주제는 미시적 관점에서의 ‘역사서술이나 역사학에서의 시간’이 아니라 대체로 거시적 관점에서의 대문자 ‘역사(History)에서의 시간’이었다. 본 논문은 이러한 문제의식에서 출발해 ‘역사서술에서의 시간’이란 무엇이고, 그동안 역사서술 또는 역사학에서 시간은 어떻게 이해되고 다루어져 왔는가의 문제를 다룬다. 관련 주제로 흔히 생각할 수 있는 역사가의 작업도구로서 ‘시대구분’의 이론적 천착이 아니라, 고대부터 현대까지 서양 역사가들의 작품에서 나타난 시간 인식의 모델들, 즉 ‘시간모형’을 추출하고 분류하고 정리하는 것이 본 논문의 목적이다. 탐구 결과 4개의 연속 계열과 4개의 단절 계열 등 모두 8개의 시간모형이 있었음이 확인되었다. 연속 계열에는 ‘연속과 지속’, ‘발전과 진보’, ‘지체와 가속’, ‘반복과 순환’이, 그리고 단절 계열에는 ‘단절과 종식’, ‘퇴보와 도약’, ‘과도와 전환’, ‘섭리와 계시’ 등이 각각 포함되어 있다. 이러한 8개의 시간모형들이 향후 역사가들에 의해 역사연구나 역사서술 과정에서 직간접적으로 활용됨으로써 보다 풍요로운 작업성과가 이루어지길 기대해본다.
Abstract
The ‘time’ defined by Kant as a form of recognition in addition to ‘space’ has been studied mainly in philosophy, not in history, because of its ideal and abstract nature. The time studied in history was generally not ‘the time in historiography or historical science’ from a microscopic point of view, but rather ‘the time in History’ from a macro perspective. To cope with this problem, this paper deals with the issue of what ‘the time in historiography’ is and how time has been understood in historical studies and historical works. The purpose of this paper is not to theoretically sketch ‘periodization’ as a working tool of historians but to extract, classify, and summarize the time models found in works of so many Western historians from ancient to modern times. The result of my investigation confirms that there are eight time models including four categories of continuous sequences and four categories of discontinuous sequences. The former series consist of ‘continuity and duration’, ‘development and progress’, ‘retardation and acceleration’, ‘repetition and circulation,’ and the latter of ‘discontinuity and end’, ‘degeneration and leap’, ‘transition and conversion’, ‘providence and revelation’. I hope that these eight time models will be actively used directly or indirectly by historians in the process of research or writing.
