Abstract

This paper implements a simple optical angle sensor based on speckle patterns formed at the output end of a multimode optical fiber and a web-based deep-learning tool (Teachable Machine), and analyzes the relationship between core diameter, wavelength, camera distance, and sensing performance. Speckle patterns are generated by launching red (635 nm) and green (520 nm) lasers into multimode fibers with core diameters in the range of 50–400 μm; for these patterns, the distance between the fiber end and the camera is varied to investigate the speckle grain size and the effective field of view, and to evaluate how this distance affects angle classification and continuous angle estimation performance. Using a Teachable Machine–based classifier trained on angle classes from 0° to 10°, it is shown that at an intermediate camera distance, where both the global shape and fine structure of the speckle pattern are well balanced, the classification accuracy is nearly 100%, and the mean error of continuous angle estimation is as low as about 0.1°. In contrast, when the speckles captured by the camera are too large or too small, the performance degrades due to reduced sensitivity to angle variations, pixel undersampling, and partial observation of the beam. The proposed configuration can be implemented with low-cost components and simple alignment, and by clarifying the relationship between optical parameters—represented by core diameter, wavelength, and detector distance—and the performance of the deep-learning-based angle sensor, it provides useful basic design guidelines for future speckle-based fiber-optic sensors.
