Abstract
Space-based datacenters are emerging as next-generation infrastructure for the space economy, and adapting terrestrial cloud technologies to orbital environments introduces new technical and operational challenges. This paper reviews the current state of space-based datacenters with satellites on orbits and their cloud operation frameworks, highlighting key requirements such as lightweight design, Delay/Disruption Tolerant Networking (DTN) specifically. In particular, by comparing OpenStack and StarlingX, we identify both the applicability and limitations of general-purpose cloud stacks, and discuss how StarlingX provides a more suitable solution for space-based datacenters in terms of lightweight deployment, remote management, and autonomous recovery. At the same time, we confirm that several improvement tasks remain, including the lack of DTN integration, insufficient optimization for power and thermal management, limited support for low-power architectures, inadequate space-specific security and resilience, and the absence of mission-specific applications.
