북경로18호의 공간적 의미와 개신교 선교사와의 관계

본 논문은 상해의 한인 개신교인들이 1919년을 전후하여 재상해 개신교 선교사들과 맺은 관계성을 고찰해 보는 것을 목적으로 하였다. 처음 한인 개신교인들은 상해YMCA의 락우드 선교사와 관계를 맺은 후, 락우드의 주선으로 미해군YMCA에서 예배를 시작하면서 해당 기관의 전임 이사장이었던 미북장로회의 조지 필드 피치 선교사와 조우하게 되고, 피치 선교사를 통해 북경로18호에 있던 ‘장로회예배당’으로 연결되었다. 본 연구에서는 북경로18호가 현재의 북경동로280호이며, 그곳에 있던 것은 단순한 ‘장로회예배당’이 아니라 당대 중국 최대 출판사였던 미북장로회의 ‘미화서관’과 관내 채플이었던 것을 밝혔다. 또한 북경로18호에는 미화서관 외에도 남북 감리회의 출판사인 화미서국의 판매부, 그리고 미화서관과 화미서국이 함께 설립한 협화서국이라는 서적 판매 대리점이 함께 거하고 있었으며, 한인들은 북경로18호 미화서관의 관내 채플인 로리기념예배당에서 예배드리고, 또한 그 중 일부는 출판사 직원으로 일하면서 자연스럽게 다양한 선교기관 및 선교부들과 관계를 맺게 된 것을 살펴보았다. 이것은 1919년 미북장로회의 교회에서 예배를 드리다 1920년 북경로18호가 팔린 뒤 한인교회가 남감리회의 교회로 옮겨 예배를 드리게 되는 데에 영향을 미쳤을 것으로 추정된다. 그리고 임시정부 요인 중 많은 수를 차지했던 상해한인교회 교인들을 통해 임시정부 요인들은 1919년 4월부터 1920년 3월까지는 북경로18호 예배당에서, 1921년부터 1927년까지는 남감리회의 삼일당 예배당에서 임시정부 관련 대형 정치 집회를 열 수 있었다.
Abstract
This study illustrated the influence of Protestant missionaries on Korean Christians in Shanghai. Since 1913, Korean Christians have gathered in Shanghai. They met W. W. Lockwood, general secretary of Shanghai YMCA, who introduced Koreans to use one of rooms at the Navy YMCA in Shanghai. Koreans could thus hold their service in the Navy YMCA since 1914 and move to the Shanghai YMCA in 1917. At the Navy YMCA, Koreans met Rev. George Field Fitch, a retired missionary of PCUSA and a former chairman of the Navy YMCA. When a large number of Korean Christians fled to Shanghai after the “March First Movement” in 1919, the YMCA room could no longer accommodate all of them. Hence, G. F. Fitch provided a “Presbyterian church” on 18 Peking Road to Koreans since the spring of 1919. This article found that there was the Presbyterian Mission Press on 18 Peking Road, which is currently 280 East Beijing Road; the ‘Presbyterian church' was originally the ‘Lawrie Memorial Church' which was a subordinate chapel of the Press. Next to the Presbyterian Mission Press were the sales department of the Methodist Publishing House and the Mission Book Company, all on 18 Peking Road. Therefore, Koreans were able to form close relationships with Methodist missionaries. After the Presbyterian Mission sold the property on 18 Peking Road in May 1920, Southern Methodist missionaries decided to provide one of their church buildings, the Trinity Church, to Koreans in 1921. This article argues that Koreans were able to rent the Methodist church building for free for the next six years due to their close relationships over the years with the Methodist missionaries on 18 Peking Road. Due to a number of Christian members, the Provisional Government of Korea was able to hold large political rallies in the Lawrie Memorial Church from 1919 to 1920 and in the Trinity Church from 1921 to 1927.
