재한 구미 선교사의 조선중화기독교회 지원 사역에 대한 일 고찰 -1902-1937년 선교부공의회들의 활동을 중심으로

Abstract

This article focuses on the organization and role of foreign church councils' support for the Chinese Christian Church of Korea from 1902 to 1937 with newly found resources. The Presbyterian Missions Council organized a mission committee for the Japanese and Chinese people in 1902. The committee investigated the populations of the Japanese and Chinese, raised mission funds, and tried to secure evangelists for them. When Edith M. Deming arrived in Korea in 1912, the Presbyterian Missions Council and the Methodist Missions Council began supporting the Chinese Pastor’s salary. Two councils organized a joint advisory committee in 1918 to help the church in various fields. The committee borrowed money to buy church properties, made administrative policies, and opened new churches in different regions. The work was handed over to the Federal Council of Protestant Evangelical Missions in Korea in 1921. The committee for Chinese work was organized and kept supporting the church. The main role of the committees was to provide financial support and advice. Their work was continued until 1937 when the Federal Council was dissolved by the Japanese government. This article also adds to the existing literature. First, the names of preachers from 1912 to 1945 are provided. There were at least twenty preachers during this period more than the eleven suggested by previous research. Second, the fluctuation of members during the same period was presented.
