Abstract
North Korea's Domestic Situation and It's Foreogn Policy Lee, Seong Bong (Pukyong Univ.) North Korea's imminent challenge is how to survive, so North Korea's foreign policy is focused on the regime survival. The main characters of North Korea's foreign policy are controlling the speed of openness to outside, making new issues and conflicts for keeping bargaining leverage, and diversifying foreign relations. With these characters, North Korea responds to current issues as follows. First, North Korea would give up developing nuclear weapons if it can obtain proper compensation from America. Second, North Korea will strengthen the relations with China and South Korea while hostile relation with America continues. Third, when the nuclear issue is compromised, North Korea will concentrate on building up the relation with America. From these North Korea's strategies, it will need long time that the North and South Korea make wide and deep relations.
