이 연구는 영국학파(The English School)와 영국학파가 자리하고 있는 현재 국제정치이론 내에서의 의미, 역할, 함의에 대한 구체적인 검토를 그 목적으로 한다. 즉, 이 연구에서는 영국학파가 그 내용과 성격에 있어서 1980년대 후반에서 1990년대 국제정치학의 새로운 패러다임 모색과 관련되는 실증주의와 후기 실증주의 논쟁, 이른바 제3의 논쟁(the Third Debate)과 많은 부분에서 직․간접적으로 연관되어 있다고 보고 있다. 이에 따라서 이 연구에서는 전통적 국제정치 이론으로 간주되는 영국학파이론과 국제정치이론의 새로운 패러다임의 모색과 어떤 방식으로 상호 관련되는지를 구체적으로 살펴보면서, 현재 국제정치이론의 정향에서 영국학파가 갖는 이론적 포괄성의 의미에 대해서 재고찰하는 것을 그 목적으로 하고 있다. 보다 구체적으로 보면 영국학파는 연구대상, 내용 및 방법론의 다양성이라는 특징 때문에 실증주의적 특질(권력, 제도, 국가중심성)에 대한 요소를 가지면서도, 동시에 후기 실증주의적 요소(규범, 역사성, 세계사회)를 동시에 지니고 있다는 평가를 받고 있다. 요컨대, 기존의 실증주의와 후기실증주의의 관계성에서 영국학파는 이들 두 이론들의 정향에 걸쳐 있는 국제정치이론이라는 평가를 받고 있다.
Abstract
The aim of this study is to underline the English School and its meaning, role and connotation which the school has been done in the international politics field. The contents and characters of the English School are presumed that they are directly and indirectly related to the debate of the positivism and post-positivism which had carried out to find a new Paradigm of the international politics from late 1980s to 1990. The debate is called 'the Third Debate'. The study will review the theory the English School which is understood as the conventional theory, and search for the new paradigm of international relations. And also, the relationship between the theory and the search is going to be seen through the study with the recent view of the international politics. The English Study is evaluated as it has the characteristics of positivism(power, institutions, state-centrism) and the characteristics of the post-positivism(norm, history, international society) together. On this point, The theory of English School has been via-media roles of positivism and post-positivism approaches of international relations
