초록
The social media may serve to promote the development of democracy, but sometimes it becomes the effective means of control and surveillance. This paper argues that the social media should not be seen as separated from the context in which the media work and, thus, the role of the media in the process of political and social changes must be analyzed with the social and economic contexts, such as the socio-economic structure, the political institutions, the competition between power elite groups, civil society, and social movements. Based upon this viewpoint on the social media, this research examines the cases of Egypt and Azerbaijan to show the different roles of social media in the anti-government and democratic movements in authoritarian states and see how the roles of social media are differently constructed interacting with the contexts.
