Abstract
This research analyzes China's policy on religion toward the Muslims in Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region utilizing the political-economic linkage model, cognitive membrane model, and considering China's national goals based on different levels of analysis. The Constitution of the Chinese Communist Party(CCP) does not articulate that religions must be overthrown. Rather, article 36 of the Constitution of the People’s Republic of China(PRC) stipulates the freedom of religious belief. Nevertheless, the issue of human rights and religious repression in the PRC has been steadily raised by the international community. Global critics on Beijing’s brutal religious policy toward the Muslims in Xinjiang increase as international media continuously report various cases of human rights violations at reeducation camps in Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region. The religious repression of the Muslims in Xinjiang is due to Chinese authorities’ concern of the potential threat of Muslims to the CCP regime. Despite critics and even some sanctions from the global community, the inhumane policies toward the Muslims will not be changed unless this perception of threat is alleviated.
