Abstract

The purpose of this article is to examine Taiwan's history and culture through the framework of ‘Four-min’ cultures, and further understand Taiwan through its diverse ethnic relationships and historical trajectories. One notable aspect of Taiwan's history and culture is the simultaneous occurrence of immigration and colonization on indigenous lands. Particularly during the Japanese colonial period, Taiwan as a whole came under the control of ruling powers. Through the experiences of immigration and colonization, Taiwan has become a society where diverse and heterogeneous cultures coexist, including multi-ethnicity and multilingualism. This article categorizes Taiwan's culture into four main categories: indigenous culture, immigrant culture, colonial culture, and post-colonial culture. Based on the foundation of indigenous culture, Taiwan exhibits hybridity and diversity in various aspects, resulting in conflicts and tensions in areas such as population, ethnicity, language, and immigration. Present-day Taiwan reflects a multi-ethnic society, with distinct cultures of various ethnic groups such as Minnan, Hakka, indigenous peoples, and foreign residents. Additionally, since the late 1990s, Taiwan has seen the influx of new populations, contributing to the emergence of a new immigrant culture. Taiwanese culture is characterized by the accumulation of multiple heterogeneous cultures, forming a hybrid cultural context. Taiwan's history is essentially the history of its indigenous people, with these diverse cultures intertwining to shape the cultural fabric that continues to this day.
