초기 유가행파의 ‘여래장(tathāgatagarbha)’ 개념 해석

본고는 『대승장엄경론』이 자신의 철학에 기반하여 『여래장경』에서 선언한 ‘모든 중생이 여래장’이라는 테제를 어떻게 재해석하고 있는가를 해명하고자 하였다. 일반적으로 ‘여래장’은 중생 내부에 있는 붓다 혹은 불성 내지는 유구진여를 가리키는 것으로 이해된다. 하지만 『대승장엄경론』은 오히려 그 반대로 편만한 법신의 내부에 존재하는 중생이 바로 여래장 곧 여래의 태아라는 이해 방식을 보이고 있다. 곧 『여래장경』에서는 ‘모든 중생은 여래를 내부에 갖고 있다’고 설했지만, 이러한 글자 그대로의 의미 이면에 ‘모든 중생은 여래의 태아’라는 것이 『여래장경』의 숨겨진 의미라고 해석한다. 이러한 다른 해석의 배경에는 중생의 성불 가능성에 대한 여래장사상과의 상이한 관점이 놓여있는 것으로 보인다. 여래의 태아 다시 말해 여래와 정신적 부자(녀) 관계에 있다고 하더라도 그것이 곧 성불을 보장해 주는 것은 아니다. 오히려 중생 자신의 성향과 노력이 보다 중요한 요소로 간주되는 것이 유가행파의 입장인 것이다. 이것은 이상적 인간관에 입각해 자칫 수행부정론으로까지 흐를 수 있는 여래장사상에 대해 좀 더 현실적인 입장에 서 있는 것이라고 평가할 수 있다.
Abstract
The aim of this article is to expound the Yogācāric re-interpreatation of the term 'tathāgatagarbha', which was declared for the first time in the Tathāgatagarbhasūtra. Generally, 'tathāgatagarbha' means buddhadhātu or samalatathatā within the living beings in the Tathāgatagarbha thought. To the contrary, I attempted to prove in this article that MSA 9-37 re-interpreted 'tathāgatagarbha' as the living being itself within the omnipresent dharmakāya. In the context of Tathāgatagarbhasūtra, the sentense 'sarvasattvās tathāgatagarbhāḥ' should be understood as 'all living beings contain a tathāgata' taking bahuvrīhi compound, but MSA re-interpreted the sentence as 'all living beings are the embryo of tathāgata' taking genetive tatpuruṣa compound, and alluded this interpretation might be the hidden meaning of the Tathāgatagarbhasūtra. It seems that the different view of possibility to become Buddha make such a different interpretation of the term 'tathāgatagarbha'. Though all living beings are the embryo of tathāgata, they can not become Buddha inevitably, since the possibility to become Buddha lies on the disposition (gotra) and effort of living beings themselves in the Yogācāra philosophy. It might be said that the Yogācāra School's standpoint is more realistic than that of Tathāgatagarbha thought which apt to deny the effort and practice of living beings.
