Abstract
This paper illuminates the intersection between religious experience and philosophical thought by meditative practice, namely yoga practice. In Indian thought, religious practical performance is frequently referred with the term ‘yoga’ which is accepted by heterodoxy schools as well as orthodoxy schools. The scope of comparative in this paper is yoga practitioners in Buddhist logic-epistemology and Yoga School among orthodoxy Indian traditions. With analysis and comparative of the two schools how they define and illustrate the term ‘yoga’, there is common elements in terms of yoga practice. Even though each school has different aims both schools use the term of formal equivalences in proving it. The difference in contents and the similarities in forms in-between two schools is the intersection and convergence of religious experiences and philosophical thoughts according to each tradition. The wisdom of the state of meditative consciousness (Samādhi) in Yoga School which can be achieved through the two attitudes of mind, namely, practical continuity and free from greed. Yoga practitioners described by Buddhist logic-epistemology can see the real objects which can be clearly manifested. In two schools there is in one common aspect that human experiences are not just limited in mere perceptual scopes but approved the hyper-sensory world of experience. Yogi perception in Buddhist logic-epistemology, however, is eventually recognized as truth only if it is eventually dealt with as truth in Buddhism. On the other side, perception of yoga practitioners in Yoga School can be achieved by the eight-steps that is the scope of beyond experience realms. It is said that both Schools use the same term in appearance, but stressing the unique religious experience within their own school. Despite proving this religious experience with philosophical rationality, the beliefs underlying it are religion. Both schools classify yoga practice as perception in epistemology and argue logical validity to it. Religious experience is the experience to interpret the experience, not just experience. In other words, religious experience is not a religious content that will interpret based on the person's religious beliefs. This is the reason two Schools not only deal religious discussion but pursuit of logical consistency and rationality in the realm of philosophy.
