Abstract
The ancient Indian Buddhist monastery was not only a place of discipline but also a place of medicine. This paper investigates diseases and medical treatments in ancient Indian Buddhist monasteries in the Mahāvagga of the Vinaya Pitaka, especially in Bhesajjakkhandhaka and Civarakkhandhaka. There is no specific disease etiology in the Mahāvagga. However, the three-doṣa theory and disharmony with the four elements theory that appeared in other Buddhist literature nearly mirror the etiology of Indian medicine at that time. The Mahāvagga is also premised on such a theory and documents various illnesses of monks and their treatment methods. The diseases recorded in the monasteries included autumn disease (indigestion and jaundice in autumn), joint pain, abdominal pain, skin disease, headache, hemorrhoids, and eye disease. The medical treatments included taking five basic drugs (clarified butter, fresh butter, oil, honey, and sugarcane), eating plant roots, leaves, and fruits, applying ointments, sweating, and inhaling smoke. The medical treatments in monasteries were based on public medical knowledge and involved examining the medical condition and trying various treatments. The community life of Buddhist monks was governed by strict and specific rules, which made it possible to administer medical care and collect and manage medicines. Buddhist monasteries considered the therapeutic effects of treatments. Medical treatments were carried out according to the principle that monks could cure their diseases and promote their health, but they had to align with the Buddhist discipline. In other words, they balanced medical treatments and practice so that the desire of monks were not stimulated. The Buddhist principle of the Middle Way was applied to medical care in Buddhist monasteries.
