Abstract
This study aims to explore the cultural value of modern Korean popular culture and arts using the KDB model and to design an integrated arts education program based on these findings. Currently, the development of integrated educational programs that encompass both popular culture and history remains insufficient. This study seeks to provide lesson plans applicable to various educational settings. By comprehensively examining historical facts and artistic expressions, this research high- lights how popular culture and arts during that period reflected cultural, political, and social con- ditions, serving as unique mediums of resistance and creativity. In particular, it focuses on how art functioned as a vital cultural tool in preserving national identity and resisting colonial oppression during the Japanese occupation. Such an integrated approach to education meaningfully connects historical events with artistic expressions, generating new insights and fostering originality and crea- tive achievements in contemporary society. For the research methodology, the researcher applies the seven-step educational program design model proposed by Drake and Burns (2004), which is based on the backward design model. This study analyzes the achievement standards for 5th and 6th grade in the 2022 revised curriculum and extracts the elements of knowledge (Know), skills (Do), and char- acter (Be) from the achievement standards of social studies, Korean language, music, and visual arts. As a result, the study develops a lesson plan under the theme "Empathy and Communication through the Appreciation and Interpretation of Modern Korean Popular Culture and Arts during the Japanese Occupation." By providing integrated arts education content applicable in educational institutions, businesses, and local communities, this study aims to contribute to fostering 21st-century core com- petencies such as critical thinking, creativity, empathy, and communication.
