Abstract

In modern warfare, photographs seem to capture the reality of the war. However, since photographs are taken only from one-side of selective standpoints, actually they convey manipulated and distorted reality. Thus, artworks which were created by people had in fact expressed the truthful side of the reality more than photographs in many cases. Unlike photographs that are based on selective perspectives, the visual images created by artists are meaningful, since they are records of the people who experienced the devastated war. In other words, the artworks exist as the results of the actual war experiences. Since experiences are personal matters and they are outcomes of limited notion and distorted memories, like oral histories, they must be followed by definite analysis. Nevertheless, since Korean War related visual references, especially artworks, had depicted the experiences of the Korean War, they are valued differently from the historical descriptions or data. It concentrates on one human being, who is living in the middle of the war; which means that, the Korean War that is recorded by artists, like battlefields, soldiers, and the everyday life after the war and etc., were considered to be their up to date experiences. During Korean War, artists worked as military artists in organizations, served in the army as artists, and as part of the Troop Information and Education Department, they created flyers for United Nations and South Korean troops and actively performed their role in the anti-communism guerrilla units. Military artists were in charge of recording the scenes of the war in images, and portraying soldiers’ activities. As a duty of cultured men,who are living in urgent times, military artists were in between the boundaries of soldiers who will be leading the pacification, and the general public who contains the passion of pure creation. Therefore, the war sights they drew had sustained an observer’s point of view, unlike the people who participated in battles as soldiers. Thus, in battles, the artists tend to focus on soldiers as human beings, who are the subjects and objects. When concentrating on general life, they created artworks that convey the exhausted reality of life by maintaining the viewpoint of humanism. The information about the new world had expanded the most during the Korean War, than any other time period. Moreover, it was when the artworks which could inform the country’s ideology, and that require strong spontaneity were both needed, and also being created in a great deal. Even though the Korean War was in a form of a civil war, the impact was the size of a world war, and even it was seemed to occur due to internal conflicts in Korea, just like the complexity of the war, the variety of artworks could be tracked and classified in a diversity of aspects. This study aims on analyzing the Korean War in the sense of the visual system, by examining the contents of artworks, which were created during the Korean War. Flyers and posters are weapons that directly waged the war, when considering the part of the psychological warfare. Consequently, it is difficult to say that they grasped the nature of the Korean War, or reflected the aspects. Thus, only the artworks, which are known to be created by artists, were considered as the research targets. The war played a major role in creating artworks as military artists, and also recording their own daily lives as pure artists. The purpose of this study is to inquire into the aspects of the war as Koreans’trauma, in terms of the experiences and records of the Korean War.
