Abstract
This study aims to confirm the status of the knee joint for curling performance by confirming the ipsilateral and bilateral muscle strength ratio through the measurement of the isokinetic muscle function of the knee joint in male and female high school curling players. To achieve the purpose of this study, 10 male and 13 female high school curling players (age: 15.5±1.58 years old for males and 15.8±1.17 years old for females) from a single team in Chungnam Province were recruited. The basic body composition data of the subjects were investigated as follows: height (males: 176.0±3.82 cm) and female (females: 159.3±7.32 cm), weight (males: 66.0±10.50 kg) and females: 48.5±7.49 kg, body mass index (males: 21.2±2.94 kg/m2) and females: 19.0±2.47 kg/m2, and % body fat (males: 12.7±5.66%) and females: 18.4±4.88%. In addition, the results of variables related to physical fitness measurement showed that the grip strength of the left and right sides of male subjects were 36.5±4.86kg and 38.5±4.75kg, respectively, and the grip strength of the left and right sides of female subjects were 23.0±4.60kg and 25.7±3.59kg, respectively. The bilateral muscle strength ratio of the left and right knee joints observed through the isokinetic muscle function of the knee joint exceeded 10% for the female flexor strength of 11.5±20.85%, but all other variables showed bilateral muscle strength ratios within 10%. In addition, as the ipsilateral muscle strength ratio, which is the ratio of flexor strength to extension strength, showed a minimum of 46.8±7.58% and a maximum of 57.7±7.25%, it could be concluded that the possibility of injury from movements based on the knee joint is very low. Therefore, since the subjects of this study showed standardized grip strength and muscle balance of the knee joint, it was confirmed that conditioning through training was maintained in a good state. It is thought that confirming the muscle balance ratio that is negative for athletic performance through periodic measurement is a very useful strategy for field application of sports science.
