Abstract
Jon-Ja-Am is most frequently mentioned in historical records among the temples in Jeju-do. The appearance of Jon-Ja-Am in the Goryeo dynasty can be assumed through relics excavated from the location of Jon-Ja-Am. Jo-ja-am in the Joseon dynasty appears in more than 20 records including records for private or official events, records of climbing Mountain Halla, and maps concerned with Jeju-do. The period of Jon-ja-am's activities started from the period of Tam-ra-kuk, the nation constructed on Jeju island. Until 1750's, the existence of Jon-ja-am is confirmed through historical records. However, it is assumed that Jon-ja-am disappeared in the period between 1750 and 1841, because there are no records mentioning Jon-ja-am from the records of 1841. In the periods of Goryeo dynasty, Jon-ja-am was one of temples subsidized by the government. The excavation of the roof tile donated by the minister of Jeju-mok, on which the writing was engraved, prove this historical fact. Until around the year of 1500, the minister of Jeju-mok held 'Kuk-Seong-Jae', the memorial rites for the state, on the financial basis of subsidies from the land bestowed by the government. Jon-ja-am was gradually used as the place for holding memorial rites for Mountain Halla, or as the accommodation for climbing Mountain Halla. Until the period of the year of 1530, the location of Jon-ja-am was near '500 Generals'(It means the town of a group of stones personalized as generals) , Su-hang-dong(It means 'the town of people who practice asceticism'), Yeongsil, Mountain Halla. However, according to records of Jon-ja-am in 1578, its location was moved to the vicinity of Daejeong-hyun at the bottom of '500 Generals'. Thus, it is assumed that Jon-ja-am was moved at a point of time between 1530 and 1578.
