신학의 주목적을 기독교만의 자율적인 언어 체계를 내적으로 기술하는 것으로 볼 것인가 아니면 보편적으로 공유될 수 있는 경험과 기준에 근거하여 외적으로 그것을 설명하는 것으로 볼 것인가는 1980년대 이후 영미 신학계의 핵심적인 논쟁 사항 가운데 하나였다. 탈자유주의적 신학자들은 후자를 자유주의적인 것으로 보고 포스트모던한 비정초주의적인 입장에서 전자를 자신들의 주요한 신학의 목표로 본다. 한스 프라이는 이러한 탈자유주의적 신학 체계를 정립하는 데 밑거름이 된 신학자이다. 한스 프라이 신학의 근본적인 관심은 공통의 종교 경험이나 일반이론으로 대체할 수 없는 예수 그리스도의 특수한 정체성을 보전하는 것과 문자적 의미가 가지고 있는 공동체적 성격에 주목하여 교회 공동체를 세우는 데 있다. 그는 복음서 내러티브에 드러난 예수의 서사적인 행위에 근거하여 예수의 정체성을 유일회적이라고 규정하고 그 어떤 보편적이고 일반적인 상징으로 그 유일회성을 대체하는 것에 반대한다. 또한 그는 문자적 의미는 기독교 공동체 구성원들이 일반적으로 널리 인정하는 의미라고 규정함으로써 기독교 전통이 가지는 공동체적 성격을 강조한다. 찰스 켐벨은 프라이의 이러한 기독론 중심의 반자유주의적 신학을 수용하여 탈자유주의적 설교학을 전개한다. 켐벨이 보기에 많은 내러티브 설교학자들은 설교를 개인적인 체험과 연결시킴으로써 자유주의적인 오류에 빠졌다. 그가 보기에 설교는 인간의 주관적인 경험을 전하고 불러일으키는 것이 아니라 예수 그리스도의 대체할 수 없는 정체성을 전하는 것이며, 이를 통해 교회 공동체를 세우는 것이다. 회중은 설교를 통해 기독교의 삶의 형식을 배우고 세상에 나가 공적인 영역에서 그리스도의 제자로서의 삶을 정치적으로 수행해야만 한다. 켐벨의 탈자유주의적 설교학은 기독교의 언어 체계의 자율성을 중시하는 문화-언어적인 유형의 신학에 속한다. 따라서 문화-언어적인 신학이 가지고 있는 치명적인 약점인 분파주의를 극복하기 위해 그의 설교학은 공적으로 이용가능한 기준에 근거하여 신학을 전개하면서도 기독교 공동체의 자율성을 훼손하지 않는 상관신학의 방법론을 수용할 필요가 있다. 상관신학을 체험에 근거한 자유주의적 신학으로 일방적으로 몰아붙이는 것은 잘못된 것이다. 비록 일부 상관신학자들이 그러한 경향을 보인다 할지라도 신앙과 이성을 어느 한쪽으로 환원하지 않고 그들 사이의 상호관련을 인정하는 상관신학의 방법론은 탈자유주의 신학의 고립성을 지양시킬 것이다.
Abstract
Hans W. Frei’s primary concern lies not only in preserving a unsubstitutable identity of Jesus but also in building up the Church community which regulates a literal meaning. Charles L. Campbell unfolds his postliberal homiletics based on this nonliberal theology of Frei’s. According to Campbell, many theologians who evolve narrative homiletics forcefully fell into a liberal fallacy as a result of combining preaching into a human subjective experience. In his view, preaching is to proclaim not the subjective experience but the unsubstitutable identity of Jesus. Members of the Church have to learn the Christian form of life through preaching, and perform a discipleship of Jesus as the Christ politically in public spheres. Campbell’s postliberal homiletics is included into the cultural-linguistic type of theology which emphasizes an autonomy of the Christian language system. Accordingly, his homiletics is in danger of falling into sectarianism. He should accept advantages of the theology of correlation which unfolds its own theology based upon publicly available criteria in order to overcome a theological closedness. Preaching is to proclaim the mystery of God through language. The mystery of God is transcendental on the one hand because it cannot be grasped by a rational language of human beings, but is immanent on the other hand because it is transmitted through the rational language. Therefore, preaching is the work which unifies faith with reason in a dialectical way. It is similar to the mystery of Incarnation which shows a dialectical unification between transcendence and immanence.
