Abstract
Christian spirituality as “the lived experience of faith” encompasses diverse human experiences throughout history. Various early Christians have passed on their affective experiences of lived faith in their contexts to contemporary Christians. Through hermeneutic approaches to historical resources, contemporary people will have a chance to be challenged and even to be transformed by the love of God. The purpose of this study is to clarify the core understanding of union with God through “Spiritual Marriage” as a culminating mystical and affective experience. As a doctor of the church who passed through harsh trials within the tradition of her day, Teresa of Avila outlined an authentic way of union with God in her three books: The Book of Her Life (1562), The Way of Perfection (1566), and The Interior Castle (1577). Comparing her three books would give unique benefits for studies of how her experience of “Spiritual Marriage” influences her understanding of union with God through love, since she experiences “Spiritual Marriage”(1572) in writing her three books. First of all, Teresa’s spiritual marriage is not a temporary event, but an eternally sustaining state of union with God. God has already been present in the human souls by the love with which the three Persons of the Trinity share and has been calling the soul to join this loving relationship with God. Secondly, “Spiritual Marriage” makes it possible for her to live in contemplation and to contemplate in the midst of various works. The union of spiritual marriage invites the soul to join the dynamism of three Persons and leads her to God’s creative, redemptive activity for the world. And finally, in her spiritual marriage, God’s unifying love empowers and integrates three human faculties: the intellect, the memory and the will. The powers of human capacities are fulfilled in the marital relationship with God.
