Abstract

It is necessary to enhance the empathic capacity in ministry as well as counseling. It is significant to formulate effective principles of empathy training after reviewing the present methods. The methods of training a communicative empathy focus on how to express counselor's empathic understanding nonverbally as well as verbally. The methods of training an empathic understanding or perceptual empathy focus on cognitive reasoning or cognitive empathy. Its training involves inferring accurately the client's thoughts and feelings by gaining perceptual cues and verbal contents, interpreting and evaluating the feelings, and formulating hypotheses on the thoughts, feelings, or actions. They are short of the ways to enhance an effective affective empathy. Recent developments in cognitive neuroscience have illuminated the nature of empathy and its component processes. One of them is research on mirror neurons. Based on mirror neurons' characteristics, Preston and de Waal proposed the perception−action model of empathy, suggesting that observing or imagining the client in a particular emotional state automatically activates a representation of that state in the counselor, along with its associated autonomic and somatic responses. Based on the perception-action model of empathy, five areas of empathy training are presented. They include visualization, mimcry, self-awareness, understanding of context, worldview, or life history, and decentering, cognitive flexibility or emotion regulation.
