Abstract

The worship of the Reformed church has five characteristics. Most of all, it appeals to the intellectuals. Recognition of the importance of the word of God, the necessity of understanding and analysis of the biblical text, and emphasis on the biblical language of the Reformed Church drew the attention of the intellectuals. Second, Reformed Church underlines repentance when it place 'confession of sins' in the beginning part in the liturgy. This is the result of the thought that one can worship truly only after he/she confesses his/her sins first. Third, the worship of the Reformed Church has a centrality of preaching, the word of God. Highly altered pulpit is a trade mark of the Reformed Church. Fourth, a sense of awe is alive in the reformed worship. People, entered into the solemn atmosphere chapel in polite manner, wait in silence for God to come into their heart. Last, Reformed Church pursues the unity of 'worship and life' by supervising the everyday life of the christian by elders. Besides these virtues, the worship of the Reformed Church has also some lacking points. First, it could be a boring hour because of its dependence on spoken language such as long sermon, long prayer, and admonitions. It is important to understand that the hour of worship is not the hour of education. Rather, it is an hour of praise and thanksgiving of the people of God in the presence of Him. It is an hour of joy and gratitude of salvation, abundance of the kingdom of God, mystery of the life, and happiness of the worship of God. Second, to keep the tradition of the Reformed Church does not mean to tie it to the worship of the 17th or 18th century. Worship is changing from age to age. We need to dialogue with other worship traditions within the Christianity. Third, we have to prepare a plan to transmit this tradition of Reformed worship to the next generation. John Calvin wanted to keep the worship of the early Church which is consisted of Word and Sacrament. However, the partners of the reformation, officials of the city of Geneva, did not allow it. The unaccomplished vision of Calvin was fulfilled in [the Directory for the Worship of God] in 1960 by the PCUSA. Subsequent worship books of PCUSA reflect the structure of worship, word and sacrament.
