Abstract

Even though the Psychoanalyst S. Freud and the Analytical Psychologist C. G. Jung examined the same mental phenomena of human being, the views of the two are very different. While Freud studied the mental action in rational and causal point of view, Jung studied them in deep and purposive point of view. We can see the same difference in their attitude to the works of art. While Freud insisted that the artists created the opus in order to satisfy their unconscious desire, Jung said that the opus came from the souls of the artists as an expression of unconscious. So Freud emphasized that it was important to trace the personal life of the artist, especially the period of childhood in order to interpret the opus psychologically. But Jung didn’t think like that. More he thought that there are two kinds of works. One is more intentional and the other isn’t. In the latter, Jung thought, the artists create their works following the creative autonomous complex after experiencing the archetype in collective unconsciousness. Then they become the stage of expression of unconscious. That is to say that they become an intermediate hosts of creative impulses which are to be realized on their own. So they can express the spirit of the times in which they live without knowing themselves. This idea comes from that Jung thought there is the collective unconscious besides the personal unconscious in human being unlike Freud. He thought that the unconscious is not merely a counteractor in the relationship with consciousness, but rather an entity which has its own will. Also their different attitude toward the art derives from their thoughts on incest and symbolism. While Freud thought the incest desire of human being from biological perspective, Jung thought it symbolically. Jung thought that the incest desire has not aimed at actual sexual intercourse with parents, but rather a symbolic desire for rebirth through their great parents. In fact Jung likes to think symbols much more widely than Freud who interprets them in relation to actual sexual desire. Thus we can see many images expressed by the artists more abundantly. That’s why Jung emphasized that it needs not to interpret the works of art but see them as expressions of souls which want to actualize.
