Abstract
Reflecting globalization in the 21th century in which the international exchanges and cooperation of politics, economy, culture, and religion have been raising, modern Christianity has been also increasing many exchanges for unity and mission. However, there have been misunderstandings and conflicts, great and small due to the different worship cultures. The painting icons in the Orthodox Church had caused the iconoclasm in the Byzantine empires during the 7th to 9th centuries. And the issue of iconoclasm came back into the Reformation period, the 16th century. Most of Protestant Christians inherit the negative perspectives on icons from the Reformers. And most of the Korean Protestant christians, who have been strongly affected by Puritans, are more doubtful about Christian icons. Consequently, during and after the 10th WCC in Busan many Korean Protestants criticized the worship services in which the Orthodox Church used the icons with honoring gestures. This article is intended to minimize the misunderstandings on the christian icons through the study on the history of iconoclasm and theology of the icons and on the relation between image and word, suggesting that Christian icons are only the reminders of God and God's works, not the essences of the represented. And they have been developed for mission and education. Therefore an image itself is not problematic. So I suggest that the Protestant churches could develop their own ways and theology of how to use Christian images(not necessarily Byzantine icons) with words in the worship for more effective evangelical mission and inclusive ecumenical movements.
