Abstract

As Covid-19 Pandemic keeps individual’s complaints and stress increasing, it is demanded to develop caregiving further. It matters more and more to care for the need professionally even in Christian ministers, members, and groups. To grow the capacity, caregiving and its constituting factors are to be examined in terms of the attachment theory. Caregiving and attachment are either side of a coin and both of them are innate, goal-oriented, and functional in that they are behavioral systems. And both include affective process and cognitive process, that is called ‘internal working model.’ By the attachment theory, the optimal functioning of caregiving results from secure attachment. They are mediated by sensitivity and emotional regulation. Sensitivity, an environmental factor, includes practical skills for caregiving. Specifically, caregivers provide safety, attunement, soothing, recognition, and support consistently and reliably. Emotional regulation is based on positive self-esteem derived from mental representations of the attachment figure’s sensitive relationships experiences. It reduces the needs to preoccupy the self, inflate the self-esteem defensively, or to avoid personal distress for the protection of the self. Rather, it increases the capacity to assess and respond the demands or states of the need and their situations effectively. On the basis of the analysis of caregiving in terms of the attachment theory, there are a couple of suggestions for enhancement in pastoral care. First, caregiving is so complex that it is involved in dynamic equilibrium. It includes support for exploration and mastery as well as provision of protection and soothing. But one may be contradictory to the other. To reconcile the two dimensions, a caregiver’s dynamic equalibrium matters. Second, caregiving includes both emotional regulation and sensitivity. To witness and process personal distress functionally, caregivers can regulate their own emotions. In addition, They employ practical skills or behaviors to facilitate the senses of being cared for and mastering in the need.
