초록

이 연구는 고령화가 사회의 큰 문제로 등장한 한국에서 종교와 고령자와의 관계를 고찰하면서 종교적 참여에 초점을 맞춘 그동안의 연구에서 벗어나 종교적 참여를 하지 않는 고령자들에 대한 연구의 필요성을 제기하였다. 사회의 발달과 기술의 진보로 인간의 수명은 이전보다 훨씬 늘어났으며 이로 인해 전 세계적으로 고령화가 그 사회가 해결해야 할 가장 우선적인 문제 중 하나가 되었다. 고령화에 대한 초기연구는 그동안 신체적인 건강에 초점을 맞추고 진행되었으나 고령자의 건강은 단순히 신체적 건강뿐 아니라 정서적, 심리적 건강 등 삶의 질을 종합적으로 높이는 ‘성공적인 노화’에 대한 개념이 새롭게 등장하였다. 여기서 종교는 중요한 역할을 하는 것으로 알려졌으며 이후 종교와 고령자와의 관계에 대한 연구가 활발하게 진행되었다. 그러나 이런 연구는 주로 조직적이고 체계적인 종교기관에 출석하는 고령자들을 대상으로 하며 교회나 종교기관에 정기적이고 고정적인 출석을 하지는 않지만 종교적 정체성을 가진 고령자들에 대한 연구는 미진하다. 이 연구는 교회나 종교기관에 출석하지는 않는 개신교 고령자를 대상으로 하며 가장 연구가 필요한 두 가지 경우로 첫째, 경제적 하위집단에 있는 고령자들과 둘째, 교회를 떠나 방황하는 ‘가나안 고령자’를 제시하였다. 이 두 가지 사례는 신앙이 없어지거나 타 종교로 개종해서 기존의 종교적 정체성을 잃어버리는 것과 다르다. 이들은 자의적, 타의적으로 교회의 출석을 멈추게 되지만 여전히 개신교인의 정체성을 유지한다. 따라서 그동안 종교와 고령화의 관계를 주로 교회나 종교기관에 정기적으로 출석하는 고령자들을 대상으로 진행한 연구는 이들을 제외한 한계를 가진다. 이 연구는 이들의 현황에 대한 설명을 한 후 이들에 대한 추후 연구의 필요성과 타당성을 제기한 것에 의의가 있다.

Abstract

This study examined the relationship between religion and the elderly in Korea, where aging has emerged as a big problem in society, and has raised the need for research on the elderly who do not participate in religion, focusing on religious participation. The development of society and the advancement of technology have extended the life span of humans much more than before, making aging one of the world's top priorities. Early research on aging has focused on physical health, but the concept of "successful aging" has emerged a new, which not only improves physical health, but also improves the quality of life comprehensively, including emotional and psychological health. Religion is known to play an important role here, and research on the relationship between religion and the elderly has been actively conducted. However, these studies are mainly aimed at the elderly who attend organized and systematic religious institutions, and the studies on the elderly who have a religious identity, although they do not have regular and fixed attendance at church or religious institutions, are insufficient. This study targeted Protestant elderly people who did not attend churches or religious institutions and most needed to be studied, with the first, the elderly in economic subgroups and the second, the 'aged in Canaan' who wandered away from the church. These two examples are different from losing faith or losing existing religious identity by converting to another religion. They arbitrarily and deliberately stop attending church, but still retain their Protestant identity. Therefore, researches on older people who regularly attend church or religious institutions in the relationship between religion and aging are limited. This study is meaningful because it explained the current situation and raised the necessity and validity of further study.
